‘Can You See The People Beyond Your Ideas Of Them?’

Posted by on May 4, 2019 in Behind the Film, Guatemala, Images, Words

Back in 2007, I remember saying something along these lines, “Edwin if you’re going to serve your country, can you see the people? And I mean truly see, beyond your ideas of them.”

And so Edwin and I set off around Guatemala to find its (human) soul. It was the first time that I’d showed someone what I was doing with the camera, how and why it was so important with respect to servant leadership and human connection.

Edwin is now a front runner in the Guatemalan Presidential Election.

During this journey, we witnessed people from every conceivable walk of life. A sight once seen, never forgotten. A sight of a Nation behind the distraction of its easily seen drama.

Filming was often done in quieter locations but here, a marketplace contributed to this great understanding …

On the Possibility of Nicaragua

On the Possibility of Nicaragua

Felix ended up in front of my camera. He is from Nicaragua. President Ortega had blamed him as a contributing factor to the protests that saw government troops end the lives of many hundreds of citizens.

After his arrest, he managed to escape and ended up in the apartment my camera and I were staying at in Guatemala City. His family had made their escape to somewhere in the United States before the worst could happen …

Notes From Behind The Inner View Camera

This is some of what I’ve come to understand about the components of speaking truth out loud. These few words point to the stark difference between ‘speaking to, or at’ the world with the expectation of something in return, and ‘being spoken’. I have also come to understand that is my work, and the very reason I was compelled to pick up the camera those many years ago …

I Needed To Die

These few minutes articulate something of Inner View, and in doing so reveal something of the human experience so beautifully elemental that it might change you and you won’t know why. The experience sits amongst and between the words. You will need to remain still, held in full and present attention. To me the binary nature of the human experience is clear when one notices where words come from …

‘How To See Someone’ Audio

‘How To See Someone’ Audio

A while back I recorded a few minutes as a contribution to you remembering your innate capacity to ‘see’ another.

From deep within the Art and Science of Witnessing.

‘… after nearly 15 years in close proximity to the camera and the human soul, it has come down to the stark realization that there is nothing to do, and no one to do it. And that this sense of profound surrender is perhaps the greatest contribution anyone could make to the world.’

Details of the teaching of this way can be found here. Many are inexplicably drawn to the possibility.

I Would Choose Truth Over Friendship, Always

Posted by on Mar 11, 2019 in Behind the Film, Words

Late 2007. Our living room. One wintery Saturday morning. I turned to Caroline and without thinking said ‘I would choose truth over friendship, always.’ She agreed. It confirmed this path of ours. Of course, it has consequence. But we do have friends. Courageous ones.

The Politics of Belonging (and the Message from God)

The Politics of Belonging (and the Message from God)

A clear skied and profoundly unusual Monday morning.

Two characters show up unannounced at Edwin Escobar’s city apartment. Edwin is amongst the front-runners in the Guatemala Presidential 2019 Elections.

Capellán Juan Noriega (pictured) was one of the unannounced. He has never voted in a Presidential election. 30 years a military man. A Colonel. Now a Capellán (Chaplain). Now representing 3,500 other Chaplains. Each politically uninvolved.

The very day before, he had received a message from God. He’d been told to come and meet this uncommon Politician. Face to face. To see if he was the ‘one’ …

This Is Why Film Subjects Show Up As They Do

A few months back I was interviewed by Mary Alice Arthur as a part of the STORY THE FUTURE Project. I was subsequently told by someone who had studied the Inner View Method with me, that I really ought to listen back to it as my words articulated exactly what is going on with the camera and awareness. It concerns surrender.

So I did, and if you are drawn to understanding this way of seeing (how and why film subjects show up like they do in Soul Biographies) then bathe yourself in this audio interview. It is 42 minutes long, so find your time. Listen between the words. Even beyond the words …

Seeing Us As I See The Natural World

So many of us are able to remain still enough to absorb the magnificence of the natural world. To recognize the interconnectedness of it all.

Without need, and without opinion.

So how is it so remarkably challenging to sit and pay unbridled attention in similar fashion to each other. The interconnectedness of us all.

A 1 minute (square!) video …

Somebody Else’s Map. Somebody Else’s Markings

‘… you think you have a map in your hand that’s going to guide you to where you need to go. And as you walk along you realize the map you’re holding isn’t helping. It’s somebody else’s map. It’s somebody else’s markings on it.’

Two minutes on film, and the sense of an Interior Journey on Camera …

Articulating What Cannot Quite Be Said

Here is a note I recently sent to a the most recent Inner View Method Program Cohort.

Dear All, so this work as you know is a challenge to describe using the realm of words. What did you say when someone asked where had you been, and what had you done? …

Each Person’s Head Measured 7 to 8 Feet Tall

During the Inner View Method PROGRAMS the live film feed of each participant is fed to a monitor. We often use a projector. In our latest adventure the image of each person’s head measured somewhere between 7 and 8 feet tall. And with just 10 participant explorers for the 5 days there was truly nowhere to hide. Which with the experience of the interior world, is important.

I’ve come to understand that in the end it is best to experience this ‘non-dual’ experience, rather than talk about it. This is what changes everything.

In our newly found UK Inner View Home, a Rutland Farm, one wall is covered with the image of a forest. I was testing the set up without the projection screen down, and ended up looking somewhat unusual (OPEN THE POST!). If I ever film a druid, then I shall keep the projection screen retracted.

Next dates coming soon. USA, March 2019. UK April 2019.

An End To Seeking

‘We are a Work in Progress.’ ~ the often said words of the allegedly wise, repeated without question by those drawn to the inculturated humility of the idea.

And so lives the perilous myth on which our human existence appears to have built itself. We are not yet enough. There is someone we must become. This life has conditions …

Conscious Revolution – The Point Of This Work

“These times call for a conscious revolution in the way we act towards one another, driven by our capacity to better see and experience the common humanity that lives deep within our bones.”

Our innermost yearning is to be seen. And to know that we each belong without condition. But when this is not our experience, we are compelled to act dysfunctionally and it drives us further from one another’s sight. I become blind to you. And you to me …

A Creative Alternative to Hiring a Speaker

Posted by on Sep 17, 2018 in Behind the Film, Events, Interviews, News

Someone had asked whether they could arrange a live Inner View Filming Experience at their event, as a creative alternative to hiring a speaker. I included these few words to give him a sense of what might happen if they were to do so …

“The room quietens as another film subject emerges deliberately from the audience. She, or he, approaches the Inner View Camera with something to say. Something worthwhile speaking. Words that have purpose, and an obvious use in his or her world. Perhaps even to the world at large. Words that set out to convince us all.

The subject sits. Close to the camera. Close to me. Eyes closed, ever deepening breath, as the spartan words of instruction remove any requirement from our time together. The point of being here, that was so vividly etched into a previously important list is now lost, as the image is cast in high contrast black and white to a large screen. Arrestingly beautiful. Always. We are all to be included unreservedly in this experience of the human soul made visible. Of humanity witnessed.

From a palpable and utter stillness, it is as if the subject ‘is spoken’. Words. And space. And an unbridled vulnerability of such profound importance that the audience cannot turn away.

Here there is nowhere to hide. Here there is no need to hide. Here there is the surrender of control, the control that kept us from seeing one another. From seeing ourselves. Here, for this moment in time there is freedom. And an experience that will most probably live deep within each of us.” …

A Participant Was Overheard Saying This

A participant on leaving an Inner View Program was overheard saying;

“This is the first time in my life that I never wrote a single note. Five Days. FIVE DAYS. And for some inexplicable reason, I feel that I’ve remembered more about my place in the world than I could have ever learned.”

This appears to be the way of surrender.

This Is Like A Hallowed Place

From this stillness and safety, the speaker starts to think more deeply, originally and creatively.

Previous jumbled thinking starts to make sense.

It feels like a truth, our real truth, who we really are, begins to emerge.

This is like a hallowed place.

Awash With the Surrender of Control and an Extraordinary Mystery

For the first time I have committed words to paper by way of description of the way I film Soul Biographies, and the (meta) physical principles I know to be in play. You can READ this overview which forms the shape of the Inner View Method Program. I hereby dare you to breathe in this CURRICULUM.

It starts with this unusual introduction …

A Few Words of Warning

A viewer who had been a participant (a witness from the audience and the witnessed in front of the camera) wrote to me with these few words of warning;

‘… sitting in the audience may appear to be a somewhat ‘safer’ way to engage in the work due to the distance from the camera and the intimacy of Nic’s full attention … but this is a false security. By witnessing Nic at work you will meet yourself and inevitably you will be profoundly moved by who you see. In so many ways it makes no difference where you are in relation to the camera.’ …

Beyond Coaching For Coaches Masterclass Playing Now

I recently recorded the Beyond Marketing For Coaches Masterclass on Zoom Video, annotated it and added guitar. It is playing for the next two weeks. It is a worthy exposure of some of the key components of the Soul Biographies Inner View Method. It is playing for the next two weeks.

You can see it here …

Presence Before the Story

The words that people say are pretty much insignificant when set next to how they are. This is important to understand if one is to catch the ‘stories’ of this human race. An AUDIO FILM …

A Few Magnificent Clues As To How To Be Present To Another

To some this may remain forever bewildering. To others it might make clear an important step on the way to surrender. This is taken from a recent Masterclass Webinar entitled ‘Beyond Marketing for Coaches’. But if you are not on the coaching spectrum do not be put off. It holds relevance to anyone who longs to be more present to another.

An Utter Affront to Coaching. Or Freedom

If you are a #coach, the Soul Biographies Inner View Method might be an utter affront to everything you believe to be true or it might lead you towards a freedom in the way you work with clients …

The Anthisesis of TED

Yesterday I met with a group to talk about SOUL OF AMERICA funding ideas. Interestingly, after explaining the extraordinarily unusual WAY in which film subjects are captured, one of the group compared it to the storytelling in the ‘Moth Radio Hour’ and then to TED. Another immediately pointed out that it seemed like it was the very antithesis of these.

He was right. Subjects are left in utter peace without need until they are drawn by something almost otherworldly to speak. There is no story, rehearsed or previously told, that needs to be told. There is no need to convince the world of any philosophy or way. Spoken from this place words hold immense truth and potency. And the Soul of anything is revealed. The Soul of everything is revealed. It is dangerous to the status quo because little is built on truth.

What Was Revealed in Dallas

Posted by on Jan 7, 2018 in Behind the Film, Films, Interviews, Soul of America

There is this field. The field is the very atmosphere in which I film. It elicits something different in nature. And in Dallas, I sat in this field. This time, in front of the camera. And this is what happened.

This film will play just for this week …
