AUTHENTICITY AND THE HUMAN SOUL ON FILM

Might the eyes really be a window to the soul?

And if so, what then?

The shooting of this film was somewhere beyond unusual.

It started unusually. A girl standing at the back of a film event in 2006. And an overwhelming sense that I had to ask her to sit with the camera. I had no idea why.

We met up a few weeks later, and barely a word was exchanged. A  journey of stillness with no break in eye contact. Unusual that is for those early days with the camera.

Since then I have come to understand the importance of stillness and unflinching human attention.

To this day the film subject remains anonymous.

If ever there was a Soul Biography to breathe-in with the lights turned down, full screen with the world switched off, this is most probably it. Wait until dark. If you can.

Postscript. I have come to understand that the eyes are A Window to the Soul, not THE Window to the Soul, as many would have it.

It is possible to truly see someone with their eyes remaining entirely closed. Yours too. In the end it is a sense of something other worldly. And it is entirely possible let that find you.

Guitar by the fabulous STEPHANE WREMBEL a supporter of those early films.

These few reflective words I wrote a while ago. Understanding that few seem to have realized what it is they are looking at when they are with another.

The Reflection

As I gaze into the world,
realize that nothing
falters in its
ability to reflect
what I’ve
come here to see.

My challenge
remains
to admit
to what it is
that I’ve seen.
