Underneath The Underneath
Awareness is an unusual substance. Beyond powerful. It stands to change this world for the good. Yet the act of seeking it might push it further from us.
The following is an observation of how we might transform the very way we see and why such a thing might be important.
Let me start with the predicaments of this world. The predicaments that trouble our lives. They are important. Such predicaments consume us.
Their underlying cause, the point at which one can go no deeper, is the way we see. Underneath the underneath, it is the awareness with which everything is seen that conducts the very way we each experience life.
Underneath the underneath, it is the awareness with which everything is seen that conducts the very way we each experience life.
Just we didn’t think to look underneath the underneath. Perhaps we weren’t aware that there even was an underneath the underneath.
We did however look to what we believe the obvious, often physical cause to be. And we sought to solve each predicament from the very place from which it had come. Through the very same half shut eyes.
Einstein observed as much. Madness. And he went on to state that ‘no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it‘.
no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it
And so, to the resolution of predicaments. Humankind’s monumental predicaments and the entirely personal predicaments that concern our days.
Resolution lies in the transformation of the way we see. In the seeing of everything with a deeper awareness. It is a very different vantage point with the possibility of a very different outcome.
Resolution lies in the transformation of the way we see.
But there’s a trap. A well disguised trap. Something inherent in the nature of awareness. Something that doesn’t mix well with the way we have grown to work.
The trap is this.
Awareness is not something that we can make happen. It is not a reward for effort, for education or for our action. It is the opposite. The polar opposite. Its nature is that it has set out to find us. It happens to us. It is not caused by us. In a way it is us. But we are so used to believing that our action is the cause of the change of everything. We are so used to holding ourselves up as the driving force. That makes sense to us. Us at the center.
Awareness sets out to find us. It happens to us. It is not caused by us.
There is another way. A contrarian perhaps even unsettling way that suits awareness well. Actually, it might be the only way awareness can do its work of transforming our sight.
That way is surrender. Essentially a non-act in order that we be found by a greater intelligence than ourselves. By awareness.
A non-act in order that we be found by a greater intelligence than ourselves.
So, if we were to wish to become more aware, to see the world through wide open eyes, there is the possibility of taking this second way.
Not the first way. The usual human route of progression along a path to over there. Let’s call it due North, it sounds important. With its success resting on the outcome of our abilities and actions. Once again, us at the center.
But a second way. An opposite way. Nowhere we must go. A standing utterly still. A letting go of the need to act so that awareness might find us, consume us and leave us with a very different way of seeing. And an insight of where and how we might now act in this world.
Leaving us with a very different way of seeing. And an insight of where and how we might now act in this world.
Of course, I may be wrong. But what if I wasn’t, what then?
This second way is my experience. I will vouch for it. And I will share it.
